The Stillwater football team traveled to Roseville and rallied to score nine points in the final 1:06 of regulation and went on to beat the Raiders 29-28 in double overtime. Roseville, which outgained the Ponies 207-79 while jumping out to a 13-0 halftime lead in the first half, struggled in the second half after its two top running backs left the game with injuries. By game’s end, the Ponies out gained the Raiders 307-289. The defense held after halftime, led by Travis Schmidt and Jeff Garness, who had 13 and 12 total tackles, respectively. The offense chipped away at the deficit pulling within 13-10 late in the third quarter. Trailing 19-10 after a Roseville touchdown, defensive back Robert Belt blocked the extra point. Stillwater responded quickly as quarterback Luke Dewall – also the free safety, kicker, and punter – scrambled into the end zone with just 1:06 to play. The score remained 19-16 after a low snap prevented the extra point try. Facing long odds, Ponies senior captain Matt Ruoho kept hope alive when he recovered the on-side kick. The Ponies drove 50 yards in eight plays before kicking a 23-yard field goal to even the score at 19-all as time expired. After Stillwater and Roseville connected on field goals during the first overtime, the Raiders went ahead 28-22, but the point after try failed. After a sack and two incompletions Dewall, who evaded pressure long enough to get a fourth down pass in the air, found an equally elusive Ryan Quade in the end zone among a host of Roseville defensive backs for the tying score. Dewall, who also kicked three field goals, drilled the extra-point kick to seal the victory and set off a wild celebration.
