Stillwater’s new football coach is a familiar face from the opposite sideline.

Woodbury’s Beau LaBore told the Pioneer Press tonight that he has accepted an offer to become Stillwater’s new football coach and to teach social studies in the district.

“Stillwater football is a proud tradition,’’ said LaBore, 32. “I am excited to embrace that tradition while becoming a part of it.’’

LaBore told Woodbury administration and District 833 officials this afternoon about his decision. He also shared the news with his players.

“I have given a lot of my life to Woodbury High School and the football program over the last six years,’’ he said. “I want nothing but the best for the program and the players.’’

LaBore, a high school football standout at South St. Paul and collegiately at St. John’s, led the Royals to a 26-33 record in six seasons. In 2007-09, Woodbury was 20-11. Eight of those losses came to Cretin-Derham Hall, Mounds View and Stillwater in the brutally tough Suburban East Conference.

Woodbury is one of three high schools in District 833 along with East Ridge and Park.

“I am excited about one school district having one team,’’ LaBore said. “There is a strong sense of tradition, community and expectations for excellence.’’

LaBore replaces Scott Hoffman, who retired in November after leading the Ponies for 11 seasons. Hoffman was an assistant to legendary coach George Thole since 1976.
