Stillwater 21 - Henry Sibley 20

1975: Stillwater 21 - Henry Sibley 20

To get to the state playoffs in 1975, a team had to be undefeated at the close of regular season play. After defeating rival South St. Paul 35-0 in the opening game, Sibley was the next opponent on our schedule. Deadlocked at 14-14 at the end of regulation play, it was our first ever overtime game. We won the toss and elected to go on defense. Henry Sibley was able to score on their possession, but missed the extra point making the score 14-20. The Ponies countered quickly, tying the score at 20-20. Sorren Gam, a foreign exchange student and a soccer style kicker, came off the bench (along with holder Cory Koenig), and calmly booted the ball between the up-rights, giving the Ponies a 21-20 victory and keeping their title hopes alive. The Big Red went on to defeat their next ten opponents and finished the season with a 12-0 record and their first State Championship.
