Stillwater 38 - Osseo 21

1989: Stillwater 38 - Osseo 21

This contest was the last football game to be played at Parade Stadium, which was to be razed the following spring. Osseo came into this state semifinal game undefeated with a 12-0 record and a reputation for being a very physical team on both sides of the line scrimmage. The Ponies were without the services of all conference quarterback, Jeff Zignego, who was out of the line-up with a torn ACL. He was replaced by wide receiver Brian Gunderson. The offensive line, behind the blocking all state tackle Jason Slavik and tackle Tom Oertel, opened gaping holes in the defensive front, enabling running backs Nate Wood and Ryan Williams to have career nights. Quarterback Gunderson kept the defense on its heels with his short, precise passes and his ability to execute the offense. The defense, spearheaded by two-way performer Oertel from his linebacker position along with defensive end Jon Klett, kept the potent Osseo attack in check. The victory advanced the Ponies to the state championship game the following week, affording them bragging rights to being the last team to win a football game at Parade Stadium.
