Stillwater 21 - Duluth Denfeld 14

1982: Stillwater 21 - Duluth Denfeld 14

This was a state quarterfinal game played at Miller Stadium before a jam-packed crowd of faithful Stillwater fans. The Ponies faced a relentless ground attack from the visitors and found themselves behind 14-0. The Pony attack really got untracked in the second half and was virtually unstoppable. The offensive line, led by stalwart Andy Schmitt, came alive and opened big holes for running backs Matt Hausken and Scott Clemens. Junior quarterback Eric Thole read the option and kept the opposing defense on its heels with short, crisp passes. The defense, spearheaded by co-captains Matt Brine and Bryan Boucher, along with the play of seniors Andy Weller and Rich Antell, shut down the Duluth attack in the second half. The victory enabled the Ponies to advance to the state semifinals the following week against Elk River, and eventually, the state championship game in Prep Bowl I against Owatonna.
