1978: Stillwater 6 - Henry Sibley 0

This was the opening game for the 1978 Ponies, a team that would finish 10-1 and be St. Paul Suburban Conference Champions. The team averaged 366.1 yards and 31.6 points per game behind the solid blocking of an offensive line anchored by all-state center, Chris Bennett, along with all-conference guard, Perry Lynum. The defense boasted such stalwarts as nose guard Ed Bieging, safety Jon LaCasse, defensive end Brian Albertson, along with two-way performer and all-state player, Rob McGarry. A defense that held their opponents to a meager 167 yards and a mere eight points per game was magnificent in keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard for the entire contest. With the clock running down, overtime seemed imminent. Quarterback, Shawn Sherlock, passed to flanker Jon “Jocko” Valsvik, who then pitched the ball to McGarry coming out of backfield. While the opposing coaches were readying their players for the overtime, McGarry sped down the sideline and ran over the last defender for a “walk-off” touchdown. The ‘78 team then proceeded to blow away most of the teams on their schedule.
