Stillwater 30 - Park 14

1987: Stillwater 30 - Park 14

Park, with their wishbone attack, featured a backfield that was comprised of their 4x100 relay team. The end of the game’s first half found the Ponies in the unfamiliar role of being behind 14-0. The Big Red would rise to the occasion on both sides of the ball during the second half, outscoring Park 30-0. The defense, led by co-captain nose-guard Jeff Nelson, along with veterans Denis McDonough and Nick Wohlers, shut out the Indians in the second half while holding the opponents to a mere 35 yards of total offense. The Pony offense, directed by junior quarterback Tommy Thomsen, broke the game open in the second half behind the running of halfbacks Sharm Scheuerman and Erik Holm. The offensive line, anchored by all state tackle Al Venske, dominated the line of scrimmage while Tight End, Daren Danielson, made several big catches to keep drives alive. The victory gave the Ponies their fourth straight Section Title and their 10th trip to the state playoffs.
