Stillwater 12 - Moorhead 9

1983: Stillwater 12 - Moorhead 9

Having coached high school football in North Dakota, many of Coach Thole’s friends and former players were in Fargo that evening to cheer us on. This hard-fought battle saw two undefeated teams exchange real estate and field position throughout four quarters of football that was “for men only.” The Pony defense, spearheaded by the play of seniors Tony Grilz, Toby Schifsky and Bob Kronschnabel, stymied the Spud’s attack. It was a game that would not be settled until a second overtime period. Co-captain, linebacker, and future State Representative Mark Holsten, put the Ponies in position to win when he blocked the Spuds extra-point attempt. With Stillwater in possession of the ball, quarterback and co-captain, Eric Thole, scored the winning touchdown on a triple option from five yards out. The climactic finish was exciting and the long bus ride back to Stillwater was an exuberant one!
