Stillwater 33 - White Bear Lake 28

1983: Stillwater 33 - White Bear Lake 29

This game, played against one of our oldest rivals, was executed before an overflow crowd at the old Price Field in White Bear Lake. At the time, a point system determined who would advance to the state playoffs. Upon entering the game, it appeared that we would not only have to win the game, but would have to win by a certain number of points. The Pony defense, led by co-captain Mark Holsten and his line-backing partner Toby Schifsky, along with the aggressive play of all-conference tackle Tony Grilz, did their part in stopping the Bears at critical moments to keep us alive. The offense, led by all-metro quarterback Eric Thole, answered with Dave Woodbeck scoring four touchdowns and Mike Orn rushing for 150 yards behind solid blocking of the offensive line, anchored by all-conference center Brian Foley. Stillwater won the game by five points, but the Bears were celebrating as though they won and would advance on points. We told our players to look at the scoreboard-the bears were wrong! At the end of the night the tie-breaking scenario was altered due to a Woodbury loss, opening the door for the Ponies to advance to the playoffs.
