Fundraiser a big part of Homecoming Week in Stillwater

From the Octoer 3, 2016 edition of the Stillwater Gazette:

The Stillwater football team will be raising money cancer research as part of its homecoming festivities on Friday, Oct. 7 at Stillwater Area High School.

This marks the fifth consecutive year the program will participate in Tackle Cancer, which is a fundraising drive to benefit the non-profit Randy Shaver Cancer Community and Research Fund.

The theme for this year’s fundraiser, which is led by the Ponies Touchdown Club and the Stillwater Tackle Cancer Commitee, is “Nobody has to tackle cancer alone!”

After raising $700 in its first year, Stillwater Tackle Cancer has steadily increased its financial support each year — raising more than $7,000 a year ago from students and community efforts. The Stillwater committee has set a goal of $10,000 this year.

“Participating in Tackle Cancer has become really personal for our football program,” said 2016 Stillwater committee chair Deb Simcik, who is also a PTC board member. “With as many boys as we have in Stillwater who go out for football, unfortunately it seems like there is a personal connection every year with one of our players’ families who has a loved one that is fighting the disease.”
