The Stillwater Ponies varsity football team was named a Class 6A Academic All-State Gold Team from the Minnesota Football Coaches Association (MFCA). Stillwater was one of seven teams earning the Gold distinction, with seven other teams earning Silver. This marks the fourth consecutive year the team has been recognized, earning Silver recognition in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Each year, the team GPA has risen, culminating with this year’s impressive 3.1 average. The Red and Black roster boasts 20 young men who have a 3.5 GPA or higher.
The MFCA also selects an individual Academic All-State team for each class. Senior Captain Stephen Wagner earned a spot on the squad. Wagner, who rushed 250 times for 1,376 yards (5.5 per carry) and 16 touchdowns, was one of 19 players chosen in all of Class 6A. His academic history features many of the most challenging courses Stillwater Area High School offers, including: AP World History, AP US History, AP Government, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Calculus. Just the 13th player in school history to earn the honor, Wagner has achieved a 3.852/4.017 (weighted) GPA.
The Ponies, who finished 6-4, tied for second place (5-2) in the East District Blue and was Section 3-6A Runner-up. Congratulations to our players, coaches, SAHS staff, and families!
