New Uniform Tradition

Black Jerseys

Stillwater football is one of the oldest and most successful programs in Minnesota and has created a tradition that runs deep.  Tradition is something that draws coaches to this program.  Beau LaBore, the Ponies head football coach, made that clear when he took the job. “The tradition of the Stillwater football team is as good as any in the state and I'm just excited to be able to embrace that tradition while becoming part of it,” LaBore told the Stillwater Gazette.

In two seasons, LaBore has honored many of the traditions of the last few decades including some from the 1960s. However, LaBore has also made his impression on the program with some new traditions as well.  One of these traditions begins tonight (Friday, October 12, 2012) at Pony Stadium when Stillwater hosts Suburban East Conference opponent Roseville. The Ponies will be clad in black jerseys.

“In the spring of 2012, we acquired new uniforms.  Due to our buying in bulk, the opportunity to get a special game jersey became more feasible.”

LaBore, who created the Ponies Touchdown Club – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization – to support the program, makes it clear that the black jerseys are special and the program is fortunate to have been able to purchase them with funds raised by the PTC. “We have needs, wants, and some wishes,” LaBore said.  “The black jerseys are not a need, but they are not a frivolous use of our funds either.  With the trend set by college football, our traditional moniker as the Red and Black, and the plain and simple joy that players derive from a special game jersey, I think we made a good purchase and will begin something special.”

The “black shirts” will only be worn one time each season on Senior Night which is commonly scheduled for the last regular season home game.  In effect, they are a special jersey to recognize the commitment, effort, and example of the senior class. Said LaBore, “Moreover, it is likely the second to last or last game of the regular season.  While we expect to be ready to play, protecting this new tradition adds a little incentive to what is already likely a big game.”
