Housley on Responsible Sports

Stillwater Ponies head hockey coach Phil Housley was recently featured in a podcast by Responsible Sports. Coach Housley, an NHL hall of fame inductee and one of the greatest American born hockey players, shared some great lessons about sports and the important characteristics that can lead to a successful life. Moreover, he shared his perspective on hockey players as multisport athletes. Coach Housley, a three sport star in high school (football, hockey, baseball), said that his hockey players have the “green light to play three sports” and he believes it is a positive choice as it develops athleticism, perspective, and competitiveness. He agreed that specialization was not necessary unless a player should decide to leave high school athletics. Rather, the athlete should enjoy other sports and his teammates while he has the opportunity.
